CAREER: Ecosystem Impacts of Microbial Succession and Production at Antarctic Methane Seeps

This research aims to understand the ecosystem impact of methane release from the seafloor in Antarctica. While a potent greenhouse gas, methane is also a source of energy for marine microbial communities and can, in turn, fuel diverse animals. This SCUBA focused research collects animals and sediment from the nearshore habitats in Antarctica, and studies how they live to understand how Antarctica fits in the overall role of methane in a coupled ocean and atmospheric system and methane fits in the Antarctic Ecosystem.
