Kamala Sankaram is a composer and vocalist making work across the boundaries of opera, experimental music and sound installation. Building from a place of curiosity and a desire to center unfamiliar perspectives, recent projects have included compositions for a dancer-controlled digital mouth, an opera for the trees of Prospect Park, an opera with live data mining of the audience and a chorus of 25 tablet computers, and an augmented reality music walk exploring the history of Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx. This 2026/2027 season, her first grand opera will premiere at Minnesota Opera, as well as productions in Seoul, San Francisco, New York City, and San Diego.
